Spider-Man Over The Spider-Verse

My esteemed colleague Christy Lemire opened her review of Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse with a quote from her nine-times old self, asking if she could see it again, so I guess some community quotes mine nine times. old to open it “ This may be the classiest movie I've ever seen. "

'"Spider-Man Over The Spider-Verse" rushes to the defense this week, lifting the masterful "Spider-Man: The Spider-Verse" verse with astonishing vigor, indelible characters and complex themes. The first comment I made after seeing it was "such an important film". As the work of a young artist who refuses to be limited to the frame, "Over the Spider's Verse" is also full of unfathomable images and intriguing ideas. It's a smart and exciting piece that reminded me of other great sequels like The Dark Knight and The Empire Strikes Back. " Like those shots, it'll leave observers eagerly anticipating the coming chapter( coming in March 2024) and excite them as it creates a story about youthful people who refuse to conform to the idea of what an idol arc should be. . .

Across the Spider-Verse picks up shortly after the action of the first film. Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) is back in her macrocosm, trying to keep her identity a secret from her father George (Shea Whigham). When an alternate interpretation of an outlaw shark (Jorma Taccone) enters his reality, the violent Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and confident Spider-Woman (Issa Rae) track down the evil river. They reveal to Gwen that they are part of a secret society of spiders that have wreaked havoc between universes, ending up with the villains falling on the wrong bone and taking them back home. When Gwen's identity with her father explodes, she joins the Spider-Crew to solve crimes across the multiverse.

Of course, the loser discovers that Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is basically one of those crimes. His macrocosm Peter Parker failed in his attempt to save him, and Miles' stinky spider wasn't supposed to be there. But it was. what now The backbone of this story is about pushing back against determinism and moving forward with what's in front of you. Superhero culture has used several stories to expand on the implicit concept, but this movie (and I hope those themes really hit home) suggests that it's much more important to hold reality in your hands than to imagine all the other bones. it could be. It's about taking control of your destiny rather than succumbing to a scripted tale of heroism. aside from extreme superhero imagery, it's more of a reward for happiness. And that is an important thing.

Back to Miles. He plays Brooklyn and tries to balance being a good student and the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. She considers telling her mama Rio( Luna Lauren Vélez) and father Jefferson( Brian Tyree Henry) the verity, but worries about what it might do to their relationship if she does. One day, a strange duck appears in the form of The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), whom Miles considers only "the villain of the week." Formerly known as Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, a former Hand of Alchemax who transformed during the action of the first film and could manipulate time and space through multiple doors. It's kind of cute at first how he tries to steal an access-controlled ATM, but The Spot becomes significantly more dangerous as his powers grow, opening corridors that can destroy worlds.

Naturally, The Spot's appearance draws the attention of the Spider Society, transferring Gwen and company back into Miles Morales' life. The first episode of their reunion is an absolute spectacle as the two characters jump and swing through the megacity, fluttering through the sky. It culminates in a series of shots high above the megacity as the pen sits upside down, the horizon upside down behind them. It's a quiet sequence in a film that's often very loud, and a monument to the film's stunning visual assertiveness, as striking in its silence as its noise. However, the alternate film continues with the question of how heroism is defined, When the first film asks who becomes an idol.

Why does every idol arc have to be the same? Why does such an important superhero tradition abandon the idea that heroism can only arise through tragedy? In a time when the superhero image has taken over the culture, pensioners Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callahan use a lively freedom to deconstruct the world they know and love. It's a script that deserves all its 140 commas and is almost inviting with its abundance of ideas. (Honestly, my younger self also turned to me at one point and said, "I don't know what's going on. (He said this with a smile.)

Of course, the extreme brings back his imagination beyond his ideas. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson capitalizes on the aesthetic of the first film in one of the most stunning and well-executed animated films of all time. The animators are really using their format since morning to do effects that would never be possible in the MCU, and the art in "Across the Spider-Verse" really feels more solid than the first film.

It's not just that every action sequence brings half a billion bones to a live-action film. The point is that this freedom was used artistically and coherently, not simply luxuriously. In fact, in a film where the characters defy time and space with every jump and dive, the action choreography is actually easier to follow than some Hollywood films.
