Coach Frank Reich's seat grows hotter as cougars drop to 1- 10
CHARLOTTE,N.C.-- Carolina cougars proprietor David Tepper appeared to be in a good mood last Monday as he stood by novitiate quarterback Bryce Young tattling out lemon, dressing and all the other Thanksgiving seasoning to about 1,300 area kiddies.
After Sunday's 17- 10 loss to the Tennessee elephants on the road at Nissan Stadium, the vacation joy was gone from the NFL's fourth- flush proprietor($20.6 billion, according to Forbes).
He left the callers locker room shaking his head in nausea and was heard by multiple journalists yelling" F---!''
That should not come as a surprise. The cougars have an NFL- worst 1- 10 record and are assured of a sixth straight losing season since Tepper bought the platoon in 2018 for$2.275 billion. Young, theNo. 1 overall of the 2023 draft that Carolina traded two first-round picks and star wide receiver DJ Moore to get, continues to struggle mightily behind an obnoxious line that's a shambles.
suckers are so shocked that in two homes games-- Minnesota and Dallas-- suckers from the visiting platoon made Bank of America Stadium look like a home game for them. Tepper can not like any of this.
Which brings us to the big question Can Frank Reich survive his first season as Carolina's trainer?
He clearly did not sound like a trainer who had any answers on Sunday. " What are you going to do?'' Reich said." You're 1- 10. Are you going to feel sorry for yourself? Is there commodity that's going to magically fix everything? No.
" These games are winnable. That communication does not fly when you're 1- 10, but I know these games are winnable.''
But the cougars are not winning, because the offense Reich directs scored 15 or smaller points for the fifth straight week and for the seventh time in 11 games. And they are not winning because Young ranks last in the NFL in Total QBR and the 2021 Heisman jewel winner turns the ball over too important.
His first- half bobble on Sunday at his own 25 set up an easy touchdown by the elephants that turned out to be the difference.
That is not good when the head trainer was hired for his obnoxious moxie.
The message is that we have to do a better job offensively, coaching and making plays, guarding the passer.
Reich is right-- Young needs further protection to operate at a winning position, and the obnoxious line has failed miserably.
Young has now been sacked 40 times, the fifth most through his first 10 games since sacks were first tracked in 1963.
He was sacked four times Sunday and dragooned 14 times, further than any other quarterback in the NFL in Week 12. He was 0-8 with all four sacks and two interceptions in those games, so he didn't react well to pressure. But like all the other postgame speeches, Reich said he'd the players to get the job done. He defended Young by saying that he did and quoted; path and steps.
So that is on the trainer.
Reich also called the final descent play when Young checked down to receiver DJ CharkJr. on a screen that did not gain a yard on fourth- and- 6 from Carolina's own 24.
" It was commodity we had talked about,'' Reichsaid. However, if they went all out blitz," If they went zero( blitz). they went zero, so he made the right check. If you hit this activity right vs. blitz to zero and you correct, it's a touchdown. DJ presumably came a little further back than he demanded to.''
youthful latterly said the play was on him. Chark said the elephants" didn't go cover zero.'' He also did not suppose he went too far back.
At the end of the day, I just do what I'm told and run the roads I'm told to run,
Eventually, all of this falls on Reich, and it's why Tepper left the locker room in a foul mood. He anticipated further out of Young and Reich, promising suckers on draft night that Young would help the cougars win" Super Bowls.''
rather, they're as far removed from a Super Bowl as a platoon can get.
platoon history is not on Reich's side. Carolina has had four trainers-- Dom Capers( 4- 12 in 1998), George Seifert( 1- 15 in 2001), John Fox( 2- 14 in 2010), Matt Rhule( 5- 12 in 2021)-- lose 12 or further games in a season. Three were fired. The exception was Rhule, and he ended up being fired after starting the coming season 1- 4. At 1- 10, Reich appears headed for 13 or further.
NFL history is not relatively so harsh. Only three of the 10 trainers who won zero or one game in his first season with that platoon were fired. And only one was fired during the season.
Tepper has given no suggestion he'll make a change before the end of this season, so that could give Reich time.
To be fair, Reich also is frustrated. He just does not show it like his master. His thing is to be the same person on Monday that he has been all the other Mondays.
Offer no loan agreement time in the morning is every Monday when we come with the same mindset Reich said.Watch the film, play by play and think about what we can do better. Win or lose. We're looking more at the corrections that need to be made, further than the good effects, because that is how you get better.
" You get frustrated, so occasionally you can get a little heated, but everybody understands that. We all know that frustration.''
Carolina cougars fire head trainer Frank Reich
CHARLOTTE,N.C.-- Carolina cougars proprietor David Tepper fired trainer Frank Reich on Monday, lower than 24 hours after the proprietor left the locker room murmuring an curse following Sunday's 17- 10 loss to the Tennessee elephants in Nashville.
Reich's term at Carolina ended with an NFL- worst 1- 10 record-- including an 0- 6 mark on the road. He also becomes the first NFL head trainer since the 1970 junction to be fired in back- to-aft seasons after last time's redundancy from the Indianapolis fledglings.
Reich said he was told that he was being fired during an in- person meeting with Tepper on Monday morning.
" I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he'll not continue as head trainer of the Carolina cougars," Tepper said in a statement." I want to thank Frank for his fidelity and service, and we wish him well."
Reich told the Observer that he was not done with coaching, but he added" this is presumably the final chapter of my NFL trip."
Special brigades trainer Chris Tabor has been appointed as interim head trainer, while obnoxious fellow Thomas Brown will assume playcalling duties with help from elderly adjunct Jim Caldwell.
The cougars on Monday also fired assistant head trainer/ handling tails trainer Duce Staley and quarterbacks trainer Josh McCown.
Tepper has listed a news conference for 1030a.m. ET Tuesday. There will be no platoon vacuity Monday.
According to ESPN Stats & Information exploration, there have only been six NFL head trainers since the junction who did not finish their first season with their platoon, with three of those cases having come in the once three seasons Civic Meyer( Jaguars), Nathaniel Hackett( Broncos) and Reich.
Reich, who turns 62 coming week, was fired after the offense produced 15 or smaller points for the fifth straight week and seventh time in 11 games.
The offense produced only 10 points in each of the once two games after Reich reclaimed the playcalling duties from Brown only three games after turning them over to him.
After Sunday's game, Tepper left the locker room shaking his head in nausea and was heard by multiple journalists yelling" F---!''
I want to inform you that mr. Tepper," Reich told The Charlotte Observer." On a particular position, I saw a side of him that I deeply admire and watch about. But the NFL is a meritocracy. It's not unconditional love. I understand from a professional viewpointMr. Tepper is going to have certain norms that he expects to have met. I've no hard passions, and my particular relationship with him was actually a real highlight of this short time."
The cougars are assured of a sixth straight losing season since Tepper bought the platoon in 2018 for$2.275 billion. Since also, the cougars are 30- 63(.323)-- second- worst only to the New York spurts.
Sunday's performance left the cougars 30th in the NFL in total offense and 30th in passing yards per game.
That did not forebode well for Reich, who was hired in January for his obnoxious prowess.
Reich also was hired to bring along novitiate quarterback Bryce Young, theNo. 1 pick in the 2023 draft after Carolina traded two first-round picks and DJ Moore to the Chicago Bears to move up from ninth to first.
Young ranks 29th in the NFL in Total QBR with a standing of32.0. He also ranks near the bottom of the league in passer standing at74.9 and has been sacked 40 times, tied for the fifth most for a player through his the first 10 games since sacks were first tracked in 1963.
McCown, along with Reich, was responsible for developing Young, which noway happed. Look for Caldwell in his new part to play a big part in that as a former obnoxious fellow and quarterbacks trainer.
Staley was responsible for a handling game that ranks near the bottom of the league with 1,019 yards(92.6 pg.) and is tied for last in rushing touchdowns with three. He also was Reich's assistant head trainer.
Carolina suckers have been so shocked that in two homes games-- Minnesota and Dallas-- they vended enough of their tickets to suckers from the visiting platoon to make Bank of America Stadium looks like a home game for them.
All that did not sit well with Tepper and left Reich to be fired in- season for the alternate straight time after he was dismissed in 2022 by the fledglings after a 3-5-1 launch.
It would have been a perfect encounter, Rich told the Observer. The way the doors opened for it was amazing, but it doesn't always end up in a storybook. Me neither take comfort and find peace and strength that there's a coming chapter of my life. I do believe that."
This is the alternate successive time Tepper has fired his head trainer in- season. Matt Rhule was fired last time after a 1- 4 start.
Tepper and his hunt commission targeted Detroit Lions obnoxious fellow Ben Johnson beforehand in their hunt. When Johnson notified brigades he was staying in Detroit, the hunt turned to Reich because of his history with offenses, his capability to help a novitiate quarterback grow and his pledge to make a stager staff.
He was inked to a four- time deal in January. The cougars will owe him about$ 25 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
