A dash cam or simply a dash cam, also known as a car digital video recorder (car DVR), dash cam or event data recorder (EDR), is an internal camera that continuously records the view of the vehicle's  windscreen and sometimes an image. rear or other windows. . Some dash cams have a camera that records 360 degrees of the inside of the car on the dash cam, usually spherical in shape, and can automatically transmit images and videos via 4G.

EDR cameras and some instrument cameras also record acceleration/deceleration g-force, speed, steering angle, GPS data, supply voltage (vehicle electrical network), etc.

The wide-angle 130°, 170° or more front camera can be attached to the interior windshield, rearview mirror (clip) or the upper part of the dashboard with a suction hub or tape attachment. The rear camera is usually mounted on the rear window or license plate with  RCA video output to monitor/display. The resolution determines the overall quality of the video. Full HD or 1080p (1920 × 1080) is standard on HD dash  cams. Dash cameras can have resolutions of 1080p, 1296p (common for Chinese dash cams), 1440p or higher on the front camera, and 720p on the rear camera, and can have an f/1.8 aperture and night vision mode.

Dash cameras can provide video  in the event of a traffic accident. While parked, dash cams can record video and photo when the 360° parking monitor detects vandalism and sends it to the owner, usually using 4G.  Types

According to the focused field of view:

external view, for example only to record front view, rear view, etc. cab or interior view area, sometimes  called taxi cam and Uber/Lyft cam.

Some cockpit nacelles have a screen (also known as a rearview mirror panel) that can be attached to the rearview mirror, usually with stone rings or straps, or replace the rearview mirror itself. Others adhere to the windshield, dashboard, or other suitable interior surfaces

Many dash cams contain rechargeable batteries that are not needed when connected to the car's battery lead or capacitors.

 Activities

To ensure that recorded video files are not altered after they are recorded, videos can be time-stamped in a tamper-proof manner known as reliable time-stamping. To ensure  reliable 24/7 parking monitoring, the motion sensor can record only when an approaching person/vehicle is detected to save energy and record media.  Advanced driver assistance system ADAS and parking space recording can be added.

 G sensor

G-sensing dash cams ensure that  new data does not overwrite the crash recordings, usually by storing them in a separate folder and/or making them read-only. The G-sensor ensures that the dashboard camera makes separate recordings.  Wireless connection

Some dash cams include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity.

There is a built-in microphone for Bluetooth and voice commands and recording. Rearview mirror 4G triple cameras (also called triple lens and three-way camera) are also increasingly available (two front cameras - one 170° mainly to film the road, the other 360° for the sides and doors, and a rear camera). 4G is used to send messages, calls, pictures and videos in the parking monitor mode. The second 360° camera is usually used to photograph the  front doors and windows on the sides of the car, as well as the interior. 4G is also used to send a message when the car's battery is low.

 Legality

While dash cams are becoming more common as a defense against misrepresentation, they also attract negative attitudes due to privacy concerns. This is also reflected in the laws of different countries in different and contradictory ways:

They are popular in many parts of Asia, Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, France and Russia, where they are specifically permitted by Home Office regulations  of 2009, Australia and the United States.  Austria prohibits their use if the main purpose is control, which can result in a fine of up to 25,000 euros.Other uses are legal, although it can be difficult to tell the difference.

In Switzerland, their use  in public is not recommended because they may violate data protection principles. Although small cameras for personal use in vehicles are allowed in Germany, posting video footage of them on social media sites is considered a violation of privacy and is therefore prohibited unless personal information is obscured in the footage. In 2018, a federal court ruled that although the permanent recording of traffic events is prohibited by national data protection legislation, the recordings made can still be used as evidence in civil lawsuits after careful consideration of the relevant interests. It can be assumed that this jurisprudence will also be applied based on the new  European data protection rule. In Luxembourg, it is not illegal to own a dashboard, but it is illegal to use it to record video or  images in a public place, including in a vehicle on a public road. Registration with a dashcam can result in fines or imprisonment.

In Australia, recording on public roads is allowed as long as the recording does not invade a person's privacy in a way that could be considered inappropriate in court.

In the United States,  video recording of public events is federally protected under the First Amendment. Issues related to non-public events and videotaping, including audio recording and time, place, method of recording, privacy issues, consequences of motor vehicle traffic violations, such as  windshield view, are addressed at the state level. For example, in the state of Maryland,  it is illegal to record someone's voice without their consent, but it is legal to record without the  consent of another party if the non-consenting party has no reasonable expectation of privacy in the conversation. which is registered. In other states, such as Illinois and Massachusetts, there is no reasonable expectation of privacy clause, and in such states the recorder is always  in violation of the law. Illinois passed a law  that made it illegal for police officers to record  even while they were on the job. It was repealed when then-governor Pat Quinn signed  an amendment to the law in December 2014 that limited the statute to secret recording of private conversations and electronic communications. There is no law in Russia that allows or prohibits recorders; Courts almost always use the video recorder attached to the accident analysis to prove the  guilt or innocence of the driver.

In Romania, dash cameras are allowed and widely used by both drivers and car owners, although in the event of an incident (such as an accident), the recording may be of little (or no) use in determining the cause of accidents. or  they are rarely admitted as evidence in court. Sometimes their presence can be seen as a personal insult to others, but no Romanian law  prohibits their use as long as they are in the vehicle or  the vehicle is  equipped with a factory dash cam.
