Liverpool 3-4 Bayern Munich New captain Virgil van Dijk scores as Reds slump to thrilling pre-season defeat
Liverpool's unbeaten start to the season ended after a thrilling 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich.
The Reds got off to a great start in Singapore as Cody Gakpo fired them within two after a lovely one-two with Diogo Jota, taking full advantage of Bayern's incredibly high line.
Thomas Tuchel's side grew into the match but their lead was doubled on the half-hour mark when Virgil van Dijk, confirmed as the club's new permanent captain this week, stepped up and headed home from a corner. That lead did not reach the halfway mark when Bayern got a foothold. Possibly offside, Serge Gnabry halved the deficit after Kim Minjae's brilliant through ball, before Gnabry then set up Leroy Sane to level with just under ten shots to go. A host of changes were made at half-time, one of which was the introduction of Luiz Diaz, who restored Liverpool's lead after getting on the end of Mohamed Salah's pass and finishing well.
Once again Liverpool were blocked and their defense went against them. Alisson headed Matthijs de Ligt's free-kick straight home, but straight into the path of Josip Stanisic, who had an easy task to respond. The match appeared to be heading for a penalty shoot-out as it hit the break, but Frans Kratzig had other ideas as he crossed the corner and fired into the top corner behind a stunned Alisson.
